REFEREE CALLS MATCH OFF AT 1:30PM-UTTER DISGRACE
Saturday, January 03, 2009 (12 reads)

Today's Blue Square North match at Harrogate was called off at 1:30pm this afternoon. It is a disgrace our supporters and squad were allowed to travel on information supplied by Harrogate officials regarding the pitch.  Despite Secretary Ken Hilton's regular communication to Harrogate officials on Friday and Saturday morning the home club did not call for a pitch inspection as they repeatedly assured Southport FC that the Harrogate pitch was playable. However referee Mr M Coy had no hesitation in calling off the match on his arrival, when he inspected the pitch at 1:30pm. Secretary Ken Hilton said "Because of the weather forecast I communicated with Harrogate explaining the time our team coach was scheduled to leave and the fact we had a considerable travelling support. No pitch inspection on Friday or Saturday morning was necessary according to the Harrogate officials. This now turns out to be wrong. On behalf of Southport FC  all I can do at this stage is apologise, we were guided by the home club. An inspection should have been held this morning."
